Obesity Help

Obesity HelpMedical professionals say a balanced diet offers the best obesity help. However, this is easier said than done; not only do many people not know how to follow a balanced diet, but acquiring balance in a fast-paced world is difficult. As a result, many Americans turn to fad diets like the Dukan diet, grapefruit diet, fat burning foods, or even crash diets which do not offer long-term obesity help and often starve which create additional health problems. After these diets are over, a person usually gains back weight, and sometimes even more, and they really are not good heart healthy diets. The key to acquiring real obesity help is in finding a balanced diet that works for your personal taste and lifestyle, this will help be the best way to lose weight and keep it off.

It is understandable why fad diets that offer how to lose 10 pounds within a week would be appealing. After all, obesity is uncomfortable and often limiting. Obesity has been linked to increased risk of many health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Sometimes even worse than the health risks is obesity discrimination. According to a report published by the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, obese Americans face increased incidence of both professional and personal discrimination, being unfairly judged as lazy, incompetent, sloppy, and even stupid. It is because of these things that fads such as the grapefruit diet, cabbage soup diet, HCG diet, and more have become so popular for those seeking obesity help. But these types of starvation diets cause the body to lose only water and muscle weight and slow the body’s metabolism. Worse, taking pills or injections like in the HCG diet can lead to side effects that are not as of yet even understood by medical science. Doctors recommend avoiding these fads at all costs.

Food Pyramid ChartIf a balanced diet is the best obesity help, then it is important to ask what is a balanced diet? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has nutritional recommended daily values on its website. The food pyramid chart, left,  is also a good visual aid for the quantity and type of food.

The values listed on their chart are based on a 2,000 calorie diet, which is preferred by most health professionals. It should be no surprise that the best foods come in the form of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. But this does not mean that you have to only eat these foods. You can generally find the nutritional information on the labels of most food to see which are highest in nutrients and which are full of fats and cholesterol.

While it is not necessary to keep a daily food log, it may be helpful to at least take one day to log what you eat; the results might be eye-opening. In his book The Belly Off Diet, author Jeff Csatari says that the first time he did this, he was shocked to discover that he ate 4,500 calories in one day, over twice the amount recommended for a moderately active person. This is not an unusual or shocking number; it is very easy to overindulge, especially since most Americans are not used to judging portion sizes. Have you ever heard of “Supersize Me.”
