Master Cleanse

Master CleanseMost people have heard of the “Master Cleanse.” It’s 10-days of fasting, wherein an individual will replace all food with the master cleanse recipe: 10 ounces of water, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1/10 of a teaspoon of maple syrup, and 1/10 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. The purpose of the master cleanse diet is to cleanse the body of “toxins”. At the end it claims a person will not only have answered the question about how to detox your body, but have lost a significant amount of weight. But does the master cleanse really detoxify your body and help you lose weight, or is it dangerous?


With the introduction of popular information about toxins that build up on one’s body, many people, especially Americans who eat a lot of processed foods, are becoming increasingly interested on how to detox, perform a liver cleanse and using methods such as juice cleanse.


What exactly are toxins? 

According to 21 Pounds in 21 Days by Roni DeLuz, a toxin is anything the body takes in but is unable to either excrete from the system or turn into energy. She and many other supporters of detox methods, claim that toxins are found in everything, from make-up and antiperspirants to tap water. In order to have good healthy we need to detox, get rid of all these toxins in our bodies.

There is some scientific basis behind this. Antiperspirants are poisonous. Water contains trace amounts of poisons such as fluoride, cyanide, and arsenic. Of course, all this is regulated: the EPA requires tap water to be tested regularly by local townships to determine if these poisons are found in low, not harmful levels. Similarly, the FDA screens products, such as antiperspirants, and foods for the same reason. While these things are poisonous, Amy Tuteur, MD in an article found at science based medicine, says there is a major difference between poisons and toxins: poisons are taken into the body and then eliminated by the liver, kidneys, and digestive system. Whereas toxins that build up in the body, she says, simply do not exist. Scientists and master cleanse supporters are forever at war on this issue. Sometimes the better alternative is to follow either either a vegan diet plan or vegetarian diet plan.



Why Cleanse.

Naturally, there is another reason why many Americans are drawn to the master cleanse: in addition to eliminating toxins from the body, supporters claim that it can provide obesity help. Celebrities like Beyonce Knowles and Jared Leto have used the master cleanse and praise it for making them lose as much as 60 pounds. Roni DeLuz claims that this extreme weight loss is possible because toxins are stored in fat cells and when the toxins are released, so is excess fat.


Need to be cautions. 

There are a few considerations to take into account before trying the master cleanse. Although the diet does allow the body to take in some nutrition, according to calorielab.com, each glass is only 110 calories a day. This means that even if a person drinks 12 glasses a day (nearly a gallon of liquid,) they will only consume 1340 calories, falling significantly below the FDAs daily recommendation of 2000. Furthermore, because the primary source of the nutrition is from sugars, this leaves the body nutritionally deficient. Side effects from this include fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and dehydration, and a loss of muscle mass.


There are other alternative cleansing programs to the master cleanse, and frankly better for you, that have proven to be more effective and safer.
