A long-term study conducted by Silver and her colleagues was that of 85 obese individuals who were placed on a restricted calorie diet for 2 weeks and then randomly assigned to eat or drink a regimen of grapefruit, grapefruit juice, or water for an additional 12 weeks. Results indicated that, although all the subjects from these three groups lost weight, there was no significant difference in amount between the grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and water groups.

Before deciding to go on a grapefruit diet, doctors recommend taking at least two considerations into account.

  • Also, while caloric intake differs in every version of the diet, all grapefruit diets are very low calorie diets, ranging from 800 – 1300 a day, which falls even under the lowest FDA recommendations of 1500 calories for a sedentary individual.
