Dukan Diet

Dukan DietThe Dukan diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate weight loss program designed by medical doctor and nutritionist Pierre Dukan. First released about 10 years ago in France and called “the European Atkins Diet”. Dukan’s weight loss strategy has reportedly helped 24 million people from 20 different countries lose a significant amount of weight, all while still eating as much food as they like. Supporters of the Dukan diet say that this is the best way to lose weight and they have lost weight on the diet while still eating all they want and never going hungry while keeping a balanced diet. Others, however, believe that the high protein content of the Dukan diet is unhealthy, and does not provide any obesity help


To begin the Dukan diet, all you have to do is take a questionnaire to determine your realistic weight loss goal. The diet is then tailor-made to each individual dieter based on personal determining factors such as how many diets they have followed in the past, types like the grapefruit diet, fat burning food diets, what were their highest and lowest weights, and their bone structure. 



The diet follows 4 phases: attack, cruise, consolidation, and permanent stabilization. 


  • “Attack” phase lasts anywhere between 3 to 7 days and consists of eating nothing but proteins. The point of this phase is to kick-start the weight loss process. 
  • “Cruise” stage, 32 vegetables are added to the list of allowed foods. This phase will last, on average about 3 days for every pound of weight you would like to lose. 
  • “Consolidation,” lasts about 5 days for every pound lost.
  • “Cruise” phase, allows even more foods into the list and allows 2 “celebration” meals per week. 
  • “Permanent stabilization” phase is the one you will stay in for the rest of your life. The diet mostly goes back to normal at this stage, except that the dieter must eat 3 tablespoons of oat bran a day and take one day out of the week to eat a high-protein similar to the “attack” phase. 

Additionally, a 20-minute daily walk is absolutely necessary to maintain the weight you’ve lost.

The popularity of the Dukan diet is due to the fact that, far from a crash diet or a restrictive 1200 calorie meal plan, dieters can eat as much as they like, whenever they like. The secret to the diet is the Dukan diet menu, which introduces 100 different foods into the plan, all high in protein. Protein makes the body feel fuller faster and for longer than carbohydrates and starches, which the diet restricts.


Common side effects of the high protein Dukan diet are constipation, dry mouth, fatigue, and bad breath, but some doctors fear that these are not the most severe side-effects possible if a dieter adheres to the Dukan diet for several years. Keri Gans, MS, RD, and a spokesperson for American Dietetic Association, says that losing weight as quickly as one does on the Dukan Diet (as much as 7 pounds in 5 days,) can lead to gallstones. In a 2011 slander case, a French court ruled in favor of a nutritionist who criticized the Dukan diet for being an unsafe diet. The nutritionist, Dr. Elisabeth Weichselbaum, claimed that the high protein content of the diet could cause long-term health problems such as heart disease and breast cancer.


Weichselbaum says that eating a high-protein diet for a short while to kick-start weight loss is okay and probably will not cause any adverse health problems, but to do it for as long as the Dukan diet recommends makes one lacking in essential nutrients. Many other doctors agree, stating that heart healthy diets are not possible to maintain in any diet that demands the restriction of any one food group such as the Dukan diet.
